I define “magic” as the act of affecting a change to reality/consciousness, by manipulating symbols, images, words, etc. This has been at the heart of magical, occult, religious, etc. practices for as long as we have records of material culture. If someone can write a series of the exact perfect words in the exact right order to fundamentally change the way someone understands the world, is that not magical? If I told you that the first person was a “sorcerer” and that they wrote an “incantation” in their “grimoire” you would probably perceive it as a spell, an act of magic. On the other hand, if I told you they were not a sorcerer, but a “writer” and they did not write an incantation but a “poem” and they wrote not in a grimoire but in a “book”, well now its no longer magical. Why? The act is the same, the result is the same, the only thing that has changed is the words. And that too is an act of magic, a change to a few symbols can change your reality. This might need further work and refining but I think that’s all I have for now.
